Kyambogo 1-1 Nkumba
Hebert Galiwango grabbed a late equalizer for Kyambogo University in a 1-1 draw with midlands rival Nkumba University on Wednesday, denying the in form visitors a victory that would have lifted them to first place in the University League.
The Kyambogo striker lashed in a left foot shot from close range in the 87th minute, making a statement to
manager Eddy Butindo who had given him his first start of all the games.
Samson Mutyaba put the visitors ahead in the 26th minute when he showed quick reactions to guide home a powerful finish after the Kyanbogo goal keeper Rahuman Adui was beaten with his defence.
Now Nkumba maintain their second place, and Kyambogo stayed top of the league table with only goal difference separating them. But Nkumba bossed possession for long spells of a match that only sprung into life after Mutyaba’s goal, his first in all competitions this season.
“The response of the players to falling behind was excellent I cannot ask for any more,” Eddy Butindo said. “Everybody is in it together, we need every player to perform.”
Samson Mutyaba nearly won all three points for Nkumba when his shot eluded just over the bar.
But that would have been unfair to Kyambogo, which also went close through Ismail Edu, Joseph Adriko and Moses Guloba after the break.
In the end, they needed Hebert Galiwango to get them out of trouble and he couldn’t have picked a better time to show his eye for goal, with his Manager Eddy Butindo in the stands.
But he showed he is one of the University’s most lethal strikers by taking just 87 minutes to make his mark on his first debut, lurking at the 16 yard box after a well brought in cross from Moses Guloba to steer home a predatory finish.
It was only the second goal Nkumba has conceded in four games under Patrick Ssebuliba in the new league. “Having been 1-0 in front and with decent control of the game for long parts, we are a bit disappointed not to win,” Nkumba captain Allan Zirimenya said. And we missed a couple of our key players due to indiscipline issues, but we tried our level best.
In a nice touch by Kyambogo fans, a minute’s applause was dedicated to the team after salvaging a draw and they ran to the Nkumba bus to boo at them.
