Vipers SC left full back Godfrey Walusimbi has turned down the chance to captain the national soccer team the Cranes at the forthcoming CECAFA Tusker Senior Challenge Cup to be held in Kampala.
The gifted defender was chosen by Coach Bobby Williamson to skipper the side after omission of Andrew Mwesigwa and Simeon Masaba from the squad that is preparing to defend the title they won last year in Dar es Salam.
“He has written to the authorities turning down the leadership role for what he called personal reasons”, said the national team spokesperson Fred Katende.
“The management team appointed Hassan Wasswa to take on the role he once managed in the friendly match between Uganda and Botswana recently”, added Katende
However, in an exclusive interview with Kawowo Sports, Walusimbi stated that he was not ready for the responsibility and besides was not asked before being announced.
“I just feel free to play without the armband. I wish they had contacted me before making the appointment public”, he said.
It should be noted that Hassan Wasswa was not part of the initial squad summoned for the tournament but was later included after the technical team dropped defenders Edward Ssali (harm string) and Joseph Owino due to fitness levels.
