From bottom to second and just a point behind table leaders Senegal, Uganda Cranes is firmly back into contention for a berth at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The Cranes edged a determined Liberian side with a 1-0 victory  on Saturday at Namboole thanks to Tony Mawejje’s elegant fifth minute strike and with the duel between Angola and Senegal ending square at 1-1, in Luanda, the group becomes tighter than a miser’s wallet with all nations having an opportunity to top it.

As it stands, Senegal maintained its top spot with 6 points; Uganda comes second with 5 while Angola and Liberia are third and fourth respectively with four albeit the later above with a better goal difference.

Kawowo Sports’ Ismael Kiyonga assesses the mathematical chances of each nation and here is how each can progress to the final round

HOW EACH TEAM CAN TOP THE GROUP

SENEGAL: The Lions of Teranga are still favorites to top the group as they need just four points from a possible six against Liberia and Uganda.

If Senegal draw one and win the other and closest challengers Uganda fail to collect maximum points from their two games, they will finish top on 10 points. This is assumed that Cranes wins and draws one, the best they can finish is second on nine points.

SENEGAL’s next fixtures: June 15, Vs Liberia (A) and September 6 Vs Uganda (H – Neutral ground though).

UGANDA: Like Senegal, Cranes can finish their own job by collecting maximum points from their remaining two fixtures against Angola and Senegal. This takes them to un assailable eleven points.

However, if Senegal loses to Liberia and Uganda beat Angola next weekend; drawing with Senegal in their last fixture coupled with Liberia’s loss to Angola in their last fixture too also means the Cranes can progress with only four points collected.

UGANDA’s next fixtures: June 15, Vs Angola (H) and September 6, Vs Senegal (A – Neutral ground).

LIBERIA: The Lone Stars have no choice but win their two remaining fixtures against Senegal and Angola and pray that Uganda falters.

By beating Senegal in Monrovia and Angola away, they move to 10 points and finish top if Uganda drop points.

LIBERIA’s next fixtures: June 15, Vs Senegal (H) and September 6, Angola (A).

ANGOLA: The Palacas Negras like Liberia, they can only do it by winning their next two games and hope events go their way elsewhere. A hard task though as they can only advance if they beat Uganda and Liberia in Luanda to move to 10 points, and then pray Senegal squanders their two ties.

ANGOLA’s remaining fixtures: June 15, Vs Uganda (A) and September 6, Vs Liberia (H).

NO TEAM HAS WON AWAY YET:

Each of the four nations has one home and away tie, although none have won on the road yet.

Nevertheless, Senegal is the only side yet to lose away having held Uganda and Angola in their own backyards.
