It’s neither AFCON nor World Cup finals but the local based players deserve all the praise for ensuring Uganda’s flag will be raised high in South Africa 2014 thanks to their efforts that eliminated Tanzania to ensure Cranes qualified for Africa Nations Championship (CHAN). Special praise should also go to the technical team led by Coach Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic for masterminding a double over Taifa Stars.

However, the honeymoon must end early enough to ensure there are early preparations to avoid a repeat of the events at the 2011 edition where the Cranes under the guidance of Bobby Williamson lost all the group games (2-0 Vs Algeria, 1-0 Vs Sudan and 2-1 Vs Gabon).

Micho underlined the importance of early preparations and has hinted at using only the local based players for this year’s Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup as one of the ways to fine tune his charges for the finals.

“There will be no foreign based players involved in CECAFA,” said Micho, “CECAFA will be for only home players, players from the local league.”

The Serbian also plans to have the team train at least every Sunday and intends to organize meetings with local coaches to see the progress of the boys.

“There will be at least twenty Sundays before Chan begins and we intend to have these boys converge for further bonding”, he said.

Ex-Cranes Coach Mike Mutebi asserts that the team has the ability to perform better than that at the 2011 edition but only if we have a vibrant league before the finals kick off.

“Hope we will have all issues sorted out for a vibrant league to be in existence then”, Mike said. “At such tournaments, we need players who are match fit and the league will probably provide that”, he added.

Mutebi’s fear is derived from the state of the two leagues scenario the country witnessed last season and signs are ripe that the same is likely to happen next season if the administration issues are not resolved.

The league issue need to be sorted soon to allow early kick off.
