KAVC 3-2 Nkumba University (21-25, 25-20, 19-25, 25-18 and 15-13)

With just days to the long awaited annual NSSF-KAVC international Volleyball Tournament in Kampala, there are early signs that the host club is in a serious quest to claim its own championships. Bearing in mind that KAVC has won the last event on the local calendar, Nkumba University 2013 Open,  there is a clear indication that their victory roller-coaster is just taking another trend.

This is after a splendid and spirited weekend performance from Kampala Amateur Volleyball club (men) that saw them record two remarkable and hard fought victories over Sport-S (3-2) and Nkumba University (3-2) at Makerere University Business School Courts in Nakawa.

“We are ready for any challenges that come our way”, remarked Veteran Pierre Kamugasha after Nkumba University’s game that was decided on the fifth set following a 2 all stalement.

On paper, the two KAVC weekend victories against Sport-S and Nkumba University are as admirable as a rain storm in Hell, but many an ordinary volleyball follower ought to be reminded, they were really grueling fixtures. But KAVC, who also won the Men’s Nkumba University 2013 Open Championships, defied the all the odds including the harsh rainy conditions on Sunday to emerge victorious.

In the first game against Sport-S, KAVC won the first set 32-29, a rare score line that refocuses back fond memories of Team Uganda’s recent Sub Zonal FIVB 30-29 victory over neighbors Burundi at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium. KAVC however maintained the form to win the remaining two sets 25-22 and 25-23.

Against Nkumba University, who will live to forget this disastrous weekend following another 1-3 loss at the hands of National Champions, Nemo Stars, KAVC won 3-2 after a decisive 5th set that ended 15-13.

Nkumba University won had won the first and third sets (25-21 and 25-19) before KAVC rallied from behind to win the second and fourth sets, 25-20 and 25-18 respectively.

The games marked the official closure of the first round. Focus now shifts to the prestigious NSSF-KAVC International Volleyball Championships were 11 foreign teams have already confirmed participation. Several other local teams are set to participate in this annual tourney whose main sponsor, National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is marking 6 years in the funding of the event.

The two day tournament will start on the 10th and end on the 11th August 2013. Lugogo Indoor stadium, Namboole Stadium, Mukono University Campus courts are all the confirmed venues to be used.
