Uganda Cranes will face Tanzania’s Kili Stars in the quarter finals of this year’s GOtv Cecafa Cup after finishing top of group C. The Cranes beat Sudan 1-0 in their final group game played on Thursday at Nyayo stadium to go on nine points — three clear of second placed Sudan.

Following a goal less dull first half that saw only a single shot registered on target by each side, Uganda came out the better side and Aucho Khalid broke the dead lock three minutes after restart slopping a low shot that beat Sudan goalie Abdelrahman Ali into the net. From then on, the Cranes dominated proceedings and should have extended the lead through Emmanuel Okwi and Vincent Kayizzi but the duo’s shots with only custodian to beat were dealt with.

The dominance was perhaps due to Micho’s tactical change at half time which saw Brian Majwega introduced for striker Daniel Sserunkuma who had a quite game as the winger tormented the Sudan defence with his mesmerizing skills and pace. Though Uganda was dominant, Sudan should have gotten an equaliser in the 85th minute but Benjamin Ochan was at hand to make a finger tip save after a brilliant shot from the edge by skipper Mohammad Tahir.

The win means Uganda finish top of group C with a perfect record of three wins, five goals and none conceded. Second placed Sudan will now face Ethiopia who lost a coin toss in group A to finish second behind Kenya. Uganda Line up: Benjamin Ochan (GK), Julius Ntambi, Godfrey Walusimbi, Martin Mpuuga, Said Kyeyune, Richard Kasagga, Aucho Khalid (Geoffrey Kizito), Joseph Mpande, Vincent Kayizzi (Hamis Kiiza), Daniel Sserunkuma (Brian Majwega) and Emmanuel Okwi (captain)
