She is in the ‘rough’ looking for a wild golf ball played in the wilderness during a Golf open along the troublesome Par 4 Sir Harry Hamilton Johnson Wit Fairway 1 at the Entebbe Golf Course.

Luckily, with the help of a course marshal, the ball is seen to have sunk in between a pine tree and the out grown grass, much to the delight of the caddie.

This is one task among others that  Resty Nalutaaya, one of the many female Golf Caddies go through while in the duty of guiding and assisting  the respective Golf players while on the course.

“I really love and treasure my job. It gives me joy to move a long the golf course while helping out my boss play”, Nalutaaya says with a smile across her face.

Start of a Career:

Nalutaaya started her career as a Golf Caddie 3 years back in the year 2000. A born and bred Entebbe product, would see many golfers flock the beautiful greens of Entebbe Golf Course with the help of caddies and her life time dream was to be one at a given time of her life.

“I grew up seeing caddies helping the players and i wished i would get a chance to play or carry that bag too”, she recalls.

God answered the call when a friend, Christine Ssempala introduced her to the sport. After all the formalities, she became a registered caddie at the East Africa’s oldest Golf Course and todate, she has no regrets at doing a job she loved from the bottom of her heart.

As female caddies, in a sport most dominated by men, Nalutaaya has overcome the phobia from peers that she is doing a ‘male-job’. “Hope you have seen many female boda-boda riders just like taxi conductors, am also doing it out of passion”, she opens to Kawowo Sports.

During the 2013 Uganda Open in August, a 12 year old caddie helped Lugazi based golfer, Ronnie King Bukenya throughout the tournament.

Dream Golf Playing Debut:

During the 2013 Uganda Ladies Golf open won by Tanzania Golf Ace, Angel Eaton, Nalutaaya got the chance to be among the subsidiary group of ladies registered for the tournament. “I was nervous at the Opening Tee box, because many people were looking at me. But i later composed myself and played”, she says.

By the close of Business on the final day, she returned a nett score of 167, a stroke above the best performing caddie and friend, Christine Ssempala.

Challenges:

She struggles to have golf equipment for Monday training, a day designated for golf caddies to practice. “The Golf kit and the balls are very expensive, and i would make a shout out to generous people out there to help me”, the 20 year old golf caddie appeals.

She also talks of the extensive par 71 undulating Entebbe Golf Course. “Moving with about 10kgs of a golf bag for over 18 holes is no easy task”, Nalutaaya says.

For personalities with generous hearts, help Nalutaaya realize her childhood  life time dream of playing golf upto professional level by helping her acquire a golf kit.

About Golf Caddies:

A Caddie is the person who carries a player’s bag and clubs, and gives insightful advice advice and moral support. A good Caddy is aware of the challenges of the golf course being played. This includes knowing overall yardage, pin placements and club selection. A Caddy is not usually an employee of a private Club or resort. They are classified as an ‘Independent contractor’ meaning that he or she is basically self employed and does not receive any benefits from his association with the club.

Some clubs and resorts do have caddy programs, although benefits are rarely offered. In Europe, he vast majority of clubs do not offer caddies, and amateur players will commonly carry their own bags.

Fore Caddying: Here the caddie walks while the players ride in carts. The fore-Caddy will give a hole description and then walk ahead to spot the player’s tee-shots. The caddie then gets the player’s yardage (either with a laser, course knowledge or sprinkler heads).

Caddies help with club selection, reading greens, weather variables, marking balls on the green (only if asked by the player), speeding up play and offering mental support if asked.
