The President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni Kaguta is expected to grace the opening ceremony of the Africa Cross country championships slated for next weekend at the Kololo independence grounds.
“We confirm that the number one citizen of this lovely nation – Uganda, H.E Museveni will officiate at the opening ceremony of the championships”, Uganda Athletics Federation President, Dominic Otuchet confirmed to the media at a special press briefing organized at the main federation offices at Metropole House in Kampala, on Thursday.
The development comes as a relief to the Uganda Athletics Federation that is still patiently awaiting the offer of $ 360,000 that the President promised at a Stephen Kiprotich appreciation dinner at his country home in Rwakitura – funds that could be utilized for organisation of the Championships.
“We are in touch with his entire team and his presence is a guarantee that the funds for the event will be available, though time could be running out, since hotels for the athletes and officials haven’t yet been procured”, Otuchet added.
Uganda will host the championships after the last two African Cross Country Championships were successfully held in Capetown, South Africa.
Therefore this will be the 3rd edition since its relaunch in 2011 and already 26 African countries have confirmed participation.
