Germany Vs Algeria – Porto Alegre @ 11.00pm
Algeria will be aiming to reach the quarter finals of the World Cup for the first time in their history when they face Germany at Brasilia on Monday.
Besides, the Africans will be looking to avenge the 1982 escapade when Germany allegedly beat Austria 1-0 to ensure both sides progressed at the expense of Algerians who had beaten Germany 2-1 in their opener.
That incident has since been termed as the “Disgrace of Gijon” and coach Vahid Halilhodzic says nothing has been forgotten 32 years later. “We have not forgotten about it,” he told BBCSport. “Everyone talks about Algeria and Germany from 1982.”
Germany Coach Joachim Low may recall midfielder Mario Gotze to the starting team while Jerome Boateng returns from injury.
Bastian Schweinsteiger impressed in his first tournament against USA and may retain his position at the expense of Sami Khedira.
For Algeria, the side has no injury worries and Halilhodzic may name an unchanged side from the one that drew 1-1 with Russia.
The two sides have previously met twice with Algeria winning both encounters Germany: 2-0 in a friendly on New Year’s Day in 1964 and 2-1 in the group phase of the 1982 World Cup – which was the first victory by an African team over a European nation at the World Cup.
