Red Bull 1-0 Arsenal
Manchester 3-2 Roma
Bradley Wright-Phillips scored in the 32nd minute to help Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls beat England’s Arsenal FC 1-0 on Saturday in a pre-season friendly at Red Bull Arena.
Red Bulls’ captain Thierry Henry, assisted on the goal in front of a sellout crowd of 25,219.
After Thierry’s corner kick, Ugandan Ibrahim Sekagya headed the ball back across the face of goal, and Wright-Phillips redirected it past goalkeeper Wojciech.
Arsenal tried to respond, with a couple of dangerous darts and shots by Jack Wilshere before half-time, but New York were good value for their lead at half-time. Arsenal made seven changes at half-time, and did introduce a striker; Chuba Akpom coming in for Mikel Arteta.
The gunners duly looked more direct early in the second half, especially after Henry was withdrawn in the 53rd minute, to a round of sentimental applause.
Arsenal fans looked to be cheering again three minutes later when Abou Diaby had the ball in the net, only for the goal to be called back for an offside and hence a barren second half.
“It was our first game, and I believe physically it was a bit too high for us for a first game, because some of the players came back just last Monday and had to play a game today (Saturday) that was a bit too high a level,” Arsene Wenger told reporters shortly after the game.
Elsewhere, Wayne Rooney scored twice and created a goal for Juan Mata as Manchester United beat Roma 3-2 in an international champion’s cup game played in Denver, Colorado.
Rooney’s 36th-minute opener from 20 yards sparked a three-goal flurry at the end of the first half.
Mata lobbed home after a raking pass from English striker Rooney, who then scored a stoppage-time penalty.
Miralem Pjanic netted a-remarkable 75th-minute strike from inside his own half for Roma, before Francesco Totti’s 89th-minute spot-kick.
