One hundred and nine amateur golfers will be vying for prizes worth 100 million as the 8th edition of the Onito Memorial golf tournament teed off today at the par 72 Jinja club.

The three tournament that concludes on Saturday with the subsidiary was officially unveiled today at Brand House, Bugolobi to a tune of 100 million for the prestigious tournament that is held in memory of golf legend Sadi Onito and his family.

“Castle Lite and Nile Breweries is not only sponsoring the tournament, but keeping Onito’s legacy alive,” Timothy Kayondo, the Castle Lite Brand Manager said at the launch. “With this sponsoring we are trying to inspire local golfers through this tournament, but at the same time remembering the great things that the late Sadi Onito did in the game of golf.”

Sadi Onito, won the Uganda Open a record 12 times and used to work for Nile Breweries.

Last year’s winner Willy Deus Kitata, has skipped the tournament as he is playing Pro-Am tournaments in Europe. Deo Akope is the defending champion for the professionals.

It’s the third major event that Jinja club is hosting having held the Eskom Open and Castle Lite Inter-Region golf tournament last month. The national golfers who are in camp in Entebbe will not take part in this tournament as they continue with their preparations for the prestigious East Africa Golf Challenge later this month.
