A record 520 participants took part in the third edition of the City Tyres National Juniors Chess Championships that was held over two days at the City Oil petrol station Kira Road, Kamwokya.
On the day Benjamin Mukumbya and Stella Babirye, were the winners in the U-20 category winning with 7 and 6 and half points respectively.
The U-8 category was won by 5 year old Vincent Buwule while Precious Waibale, won the girls category with 4 and half points and 4 points respectively.
All the winners received trophies and certificates while the professional category won trophies and cash prizes while the U-20 category won, trophies, a bicycle each and certificates.
Victor Kanyike and Lydia Nakato won the U-10 category with Kanyike finishing with 5 points and Nakato with 7 points each.
This year a record 750 participants registered compared to last year were they had 340 taking part. Uganda Chess Federation expects the entry to increase to 1,000 for next year’s edition.
The U-15 was taken by Isaac Ntambi and Gloria Nansubuga with each finishing off the tournament with 6 points respectively.
The professionals had Candidate Master Bob Bibasa claiming the win in the men’s category with 6 points while Olympian Christine Namaganda, scooped the ladies crown with 3 points.
The awards ceremony was witnessed by Mandela group of companies chairman Ahmed Mandela and Former SC Villa chairman Franco Mugabe together with the Uganda Chess Federation president Vianney Luggya, most of his executive and several City Tyres officials.
