Uganda Christian University (UCU) will host the 9th Edition of the East African University games between 17th -21st December 2014 with the main games village at the main campus in Mukono and other auxiliary grounds.

With less than 90 days to these biannual games, which were last held by University of Dar es salaam in Tanzania in 2013, Kawowo Sports David Isabirye caught up with UCU’s Rev Canon Dr. John Ssenyonyi at the University main campus to highlight about the preparatory means to these games.

Kawowo Sports: Rev. Can Doctor, first tell us, how did UCU land the opportunity of hosting these games?
Rev. Can Dr. Ssenyonyi: We expressed interest and applied for the hosting rights.

Having successfully hosted two editions of the Uganda University games (in 2007 and 2013), the appointing committee awarded us the mantle of hosting the East African games’ version.

Kawowo Sports : How prepared is UCU to host the games of this magnitude?
Rev. Can Dr. Ssenyonyi : UCU is more than ready to host 9th Edition of the East African Games.

All the facilities to be used are ready with final preparations on the running athletics track and re-surfacing a few courts.

Swimming is the only game that will not be hosted within the vicinity of the university. Kampala Parents swimming pool will host that particular event. We are working tirelessly with all stake holders including you people of the media to promote these games.

Financially, we still have a deficit of close to U.shs 100M and for this reason, I call upon corporate to come help us out as a few modalities are worked on here and there.

Kawowo Sports: How many sporting disciplines will be participated in with which specific number of participants from which universities?
Rev. Can Dr. Ssenyonyi : We expect a record 3000 participants from 12 countries which will come from 110 universities of Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Sudan and South Sudan.

Competitions will be held in 17 games. These are Chess, Darts, Table Tennis, Tennis, Badminton, Scrabble, Athletics, Basketball, Handball, Hockey, Karate, Rugby, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball and woodball.

Kawowo Sports: Confirm the full detailed programme for these games.
Rev. Can Dr. Ssenyonyi : Universities have to confirm their entry lists by the 15th October 2014 deadline with fully paid dues. We have planned a special sports symposium for all sport tutors, administrators for two days (15th – 16th December 2014).

Arrival of all teams will be in these two days before the official start of the games on the 17th December.
The awards giving ceremony will be held on 21st December 2014 with the successful winners taking certificates of participation, medals and trophies.

Kawowo Sports: After successfully hosting the East African Games, do you see UCU hosting the African University Games.
Rev. Can Dr. Ssenyonyi : Surely……Uganda Christian University (UCU) is a center of excellence. But we ought to cross that River with ease when we reach the bridge.

Kawowo Sports : Talk about the security precautions prior the games commencement.
Rev. Can Dr. Ssenyonyi : Since we shall be hosting larges of participants, officials and fans (like 6000), we have put up stringent safety and precautionary measures in line with health and optimum security.

We are in touch with Uganda police and the UCU Police for man power. Walk through and hand held security devices are already in place ready to help in security concerns.

Kawowo Sports : It is a pleasure talking to a Rev. Canon Doctor.
Rev. Can Dr. Ssenyonyi : (Laughs Heartily), Thank you brother. God Bless you.
