Day two of the 72nd edition of the Uganda Golf open is here. Its a bee hive atmosphere at the hosting course – Uganda Golf Club.

Vehicles of all types frequent the main entrance of the club, as the golfers alongside their caddies move about their business.

Whereas others are teeing off, others are struggling in the rough and the bunkers, some are perfecting the putt at the practice green meanwhile a bunch is approaching the green and definitely finishing off the task at the pins.

A golfer’s line of duty is made simpler with the services of a diligent caddie.

“I carry the golf bag for my master, clean the clubs, watch over the ball in flight, read the topography of the course for him and also help him with which clubs to use”, Robert Ssenteza, one of the over 150 caddies at the tournament reveals.

Like any other ordinary jobs, golf caddies have a commitment towards their work to put food on the table at the end of the day.

“I wake up as early as 6 a.m, prepare and head to the club, where i meet my master to kick start the campaign” he narrates his routine programme.

“Because i have been on the course for the a long time, i easily calculate the distance to be played and i know which club my master is to use”, he adds.

Depending on the tee off time of the player, caddies are great time managers, as they have to report earlier to meet their clients.

“Depending on which side of the course we start with, after a day’s work, i usually have lunch at the club before heading back home ready for the next day”, he says.

Ssenteza has caddied for several golf big shots in the Uganda and across the East African region.

From the  Tanzanian lady golfing sensation, Angel Eaton, Deo Akope, Herman Mutawe to Rwandan Jean Baptist Hakizimana among others, Senteza, a handicap 8 golfer has the experience to help out his clients.

“After meeting golfers, i build a rapport with them so that next time, they look for me for my wonderful caddying services”, he adds.

For every flying ball at the Uganda open, there is a caddie or two keenly following it in full flight.
