The twelve players that make Team Uganda’s Silverbacks (men) and the Gazelles (women) were officially announced at press conference held at Hotel Africana this morning.

City Oilers’ forward/center, Samuel Kalwanyi was the surprise inclusion in the Silverbacks ahead of Ndejje’s Brian Sentongo and Geoffrey Soro who had been regulars. The hard working Kalwanyi who received his call to national duty for the first time was equally surprised when informed of his selection.

“I couldn’t believe when they called me to tell about my inclusion,” Kalwanyi told Kawowo Sports. “I have been working hard in practice and the experienced guys kept pushing me on,” he said of how he got into the final twelve.

“The coaches know my strength and that is why they selected me and I want to use that to help my country,” the young forward added.

Three other players from last season’s league champions, City Oilers made the cut. Guards Jimmy Enabu, Ben Komakech were joined by Andrew Opio.

Four foreign based players, Josh Johnson (Ipswich), Samuel Mukooza (Jamtland), Kassim Nagwere (Fryshuset) and John Balwigaire (Free Agent) — all guards were named.

Team captain, Steven Omony, Nur Bilal, Henry Malinga and Ivan Lumanyika complete the Silverbacks. Joseph Ikong, Syrus Kiviiri and Jonah Otim were put on stand by.

Meanwhile, the Gazelles will miss the services of Moreen Amoding and Judith Nansobya who are representing Uganda Christian University (UCU) at the World University 3X3 Championships in Brazil.
