Nile Special/USPA Sports Personality for Month of September:
Winner: Netball She Cranes (490 Points)
1st Runners up: Uganda Basketball Teams (460 points)
2nd Runners up: Peace Prosovia (360 Points)
3rd Runners up: Fahad Ssewankambo (290 Points)
Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) has this morning voted the Uganda netball team, The She Cranes for the award of Nile Special Sports Personality for the month of September 2014.
This was during the sports reporters’ monthly meeting held at Imperial Hotel in Kampala.
The She Cranes have been rewarded for qualifying for the netball World Cup that will take place from the 7th-16 August 2015 in Sydney, Australia.
Despite the uncertainty that loomed the netball Cranes team prior to the departure of the 11 man squad for Botswana, The team played each of the 4 fixtures at hand; against Zambia, Bostwana, Swaziland and Namibia like a cup final, winning all the games
During a very closely contested affair,The She Cranes beat the national basketball teams, netballer cum basketballer, Peace Proscovia (360 points) and pool player, Fahad Ssewankambo (290 points).
The netball team emulated the 1979 Uganda netball team that took part in the world cup which was hosted by Trindad and Tobago.
How the USPA Members voted:
The netball Cranes (nominated by UBC reporter Emmanuel Sekago and seconded by Radio Sapentia’s Robert Wasswa) tallied 490 votes.
The basketball teams (qualified for the Afro Basketball) came second with 460 votes. These teams were nominated by CCTV reporter, Leon Sseyange.
Skin Samona pool player, Fahad Ssewankambo won the 2014 Nile Special national pool championships held at Lugogo Indoor stadium.
The sports journalists’ body commended the athletics Uganda team for the world cross country championships in Italy.
Team Uganda Rugby teams that traveled to Kenya for the 7’s series have been also given a nod.
Golfer, Willy Deus Kitata was commended for winning the 2014 edition of the Uganda Golf Open and the same congratulations went to the national woodball team that participated in the woodball world cup and finished 5th out of 20 teams.
The netball she cranes will be crowned next Thursday at Imperial Royale Hotel.
