Kakungulu Memorial 0-1 Buikwe She RedStars

At a time when the national women football league is virtually extinct with the only existing league concentrated in the central region, Buganda region had their own league concluded at Kazo Church of Uganda grounds.

Buikwe Red Stars defeated Kakungulu Memorial in the finals to take home a trophy.

One of the biggest positive registered from this Buganda women football league was the discovery of more new exciting talents unearthed by the tourney.

“Women football is still a growing aspect of the football in the entire country, but hopefully, we shall cross bridge when we reach the river”, FUFA women delegate, Mariam Kaliga told Kawowo Sports.

Left winger Betty Namataka scored the all important goal for Buikwe Red Stars in an entertaining game played before a capacity cheering crowd.

Challenges: Finances have always remained a big hurdle in the development of women football in the country.

“Right from buying the several equipment to mobilization, money hardships have time and again stagnated work endeavors. But against all odds, we plan to start a national women’s league next year”, Kaliga adds.

For this tournament alone, it took the efforts of an individual, Hamid Kasozi, who made the preparations single handedly to coordinate the affairs of this tournament and make it a success.

“This is just the beginning, we hope to make it look exciting and better in the future tournaments”, Kasozi told Kawowo Sports.

There were only 8 eight teams from six Buganda region districts. Buikwe She Red Stars who had topped Group A as London College qualified in second place.

Kakungulu Memorial and and Wakiso Hill qualified in first and second position respectively from Group B.

Semis: London College didn’t show up for their semi final encounter to grant Kakungulu Memorial a berth to the finals.

Meanwhile, Buikwe She Red Stars had fought gallantly to win a tense penalty shootout 5-4 over Wakiso Hill.

The excelling players from this league will be the key components for team Buganda at the next Month’s FUFA Inter region championship to be held in Lira.
