Orlando Pirates defender Ayanda Gcaba has been summoned to replace club mate Patrick Phungwayo, who was dropped from the final Bafana Bafana 2015 Africa Cup of Nations squad due to a knee injury.
Gcaba is expected in Libreville, Gabon on Tuesday, 13 January according to Goal and he’s to join the team currently in camp, preparing for the CAF Orange Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.
He will however, go through medical assessment on Monday, 12 January before getting his visa to make the trip to Gabon.
Phungwayo sustained an injury on his knee during Bafana Bafana’s last training session of the mini-training camp in Johannesburg, missing the international friendly match against Zambia, which South Africa won 1-0 at Orlando Stadium.
He returned home to South Africa on Saturday night, and Coach Shakes Mashaba felt it was so unfortunate for the defender.
It is very unfortunate that we lost Phungwayo but such is life. I would like to thank his club for releasing him to help our cause and we are looking forward to working with him again in future.
South Africa face Algeria, Ghana and Senegal in Group C in the tournament that gets underway on 17th January in Equatorial Guinea.
