The local motorsport federation, FMU is looking to introduce drifting as the new discipline in Uganda Motorsport.
The federation’s proposal comes up following cases of illegal drifting races by the re-known Subaru Owners’ Association.
A championship is going to be assigned to drifting to enhance the competition.
FMU vice president Dusman Okee shared with us why the federation is hoping to introduce such a category championship.
“The illegal racers have shown interest to the sport.
“Thats why we are introducing drifting for those drivers to engage with the real drivers and compete under safer conditions, score points and also win championships,” he said.
FMU runs more than five motor rallying category championships.
WHAT’S DRIFTING?
Its one of the spectacular discipline in Motorsport where the driver intentionally over-steer causing loss of traction in the rear wheels while maintaining control from entry to exit of the corner.
Drifting is not just about who is fastest or who crosses the line first, but rather the winner is picked by the judge.
Professional drifting competition is judged according to the speed, angle, showmanship and line taken through a corner or set of corners.
The discipline started as a underground activity on the mountain road in Japan since then it is has developed to be professional.
The movie “the fast and furious-Tokyo drift” offers a view of the underground drift races in held Japan.
