Africa Zone VI Championships:

14th – 19th April 2015

Uganda Golf Club, Kampala.

Uganda is hosting the 21st Zone VI Africa Golf Championship at the par 71 Uganda Golf Club, Kitante in Kampala.

There are 9 countries taking part in the event that has been won by South Africa on an unprecedented 19 times in the 20 editions that the tournament was held.

The official practice round was held on Wednesday and Thursday is the tee off with the singles and longest drive contest in the afternoon.

Kawowo Sports’ David Isabirye unveils the profiles for each of the members on team Uganda.

Adolf Muhumuza (Team Captain): H/C 00

The Toro club member is the team captain. He is the engine and fulcrum of the team.

He is the most capped player currently on the team, Muhumuza’s aggressiveness on the course and leadership skills too have never being in question.

In the golfing family, he was christened the tag ‘Adolf Woods’ for his familiar playing style to the legendary world golf icon – Tiger Woods.

He perhaps admires Sergio Garcia as his role model golfer.

The Toro Club is one of the best off the tee shot with the driver. He first captained the team at the 2015  East African golf challenge, taking over the mantle from Phillip Kasozi.

Ronald ‘Rasta’ Bukenya: H/C 00

The Mehta club based golfer from Lugazi joined the national team in 2011.

Blessed with an awesome approach shot to the greens, the first born of 5 was born to Francis and Margret Bukenya way back on 4th December 1983.

I believe my putting has to be polished but I am more than ready to hit the course

Henry Lujja: H/C 00

The Entebbe based club member has a composing character.

The born and bred artisan golfer of Entebbe club loves to play the approach shot than any other shot.

Gideon Kagyenzi: H/C 2

Arguably the oldest member on the team at 49 years of age. Kagyenzi started to play way back in1999.

If there is any player with the local knowledge of the Uganda Golf Club course, then, it has got to be Kagyenzi, christened ‘the team pastor’.

His experience on the Kampala course will therefore be key for team Uganda.

Lawrence Muhenda: H/C 00

Another Toro club player. Calm and composed best define the  character of the 24 year old handicap 00 player.

He loves Tiger Woods as his best golfer of all times and best at putting.

Trophy at Stake

Robert ‘Pablo Escobar’ Oluba: H/C 00

A Entebbe born and bred product from Katabi in Entebbe Municipality, Division A.

Oluba Joined the national team in 2013. Another long hitter with the driver, Oluba’s game has graduated over the years.

He was born on 16th March in 1986 to Mr Valence Oluba and Alice Lamungu in Katabi, Entebbe.

Best remembered for his key play in Uganda’s victory at the East African Golf Challange in Entebbe.

Ronald Otile: +2

The youngest member on the team having being born on 22nd Septembe 1996 but has a two year playing experience with the national team.

Nick named ‘Sero’ for his aggressive approach on the course with the driver, Otile, another  Toro Club product from Fort Portal is a great long hitter of the ball off the tee box.

He loves the Italian golfer, Matteo Manassero.

Martin Ochaya: H/C 4

The lanky Entebbe Club member is marking a debut on the national golf team.

Ochaya, who came into the limelight as the day one leader of the 2014 Uganda Golf open is one of the longest hitters of the ball off the tee.

He is an admirer of Roy Mcroy.

Robert ‘Par 3’ Happy: H/C 00

Nick named Par 3 for his diminutive structure, the Kasese based golfer is another quite experienced lad on the team having joined the national team in 2010.

He had his first earthly breathe on 1st May 1987. The first born of 4 from parents; John Badaki and Mary Nakyazi is another great putter on the greens.

Team Manager: Oscar Semawere:

He is the secretary of the Uganda Golf Union and captain of the oldest club in Uganda – Entebbe Golf Club.

His organizational abilities will be key for team Uganda.

He has already led by example with excellent time management, adequate preparations in all the team’s preparations and for his self discipline, team Uganda thrives thus far.

Head Coach: Amos Kamya

If there is any composed member on the team Uganda rooster, it has got to be the head coach, Amos Kamya.

One of the 20 professionals under the Uganda Professional  Golf Association, Kamya, a former caddy at Entebbe was born in Kirimamboga, in Entebbe Division A.

Ironically, Kamya, a former footballer is nick named ‘Effenberg’ after the legendary Germany footballer.

He won the Uganda Open as an amateur in 2006, having had a year long spell in a South African Golfing Academy.

He turned professional the next year and was first appointed head coach in the year 2009.

He was head coach of the Uganda national teams that won the challenge in 2009 and 2014 (at Entebbe on both occasions).
