It’s exactly 9 years since golfers swing their clubs and irons at the par 70,  9 hole Mbarara Sports club in Western Uganda, but the joy of returning to a popular is too enticing for many as the club will host the Mbarara Open golf tournament from May 29-30.

“The last time we hosted this tournament was in 2006 and we are reviving it again and hope to have a great tournament come next week,” Sam Kacungira, the captain of Mbarara club said. “We are expecting a total of 124 golfers that also includes the professionals who will playing two rounds of over one day at the tournament.”

The tournament is being sponsored by China Railway Seventh Group and Pepsi.  The last time the tournament was held in 2006 it was sponsored by then Nile Bank, that was eventually bought by United Bank of Africa.

“Not much has changed on the course but more trees have been planted and the course is in a better shape now than in 2006,” Kacungira added. “Improvements have been made on the greens and fairways since we have better and new equipment.”

The opening round of the tournament will start with a practice round on May 28 then the gross players with handicaps 0-5 will get into action together with the 20 professionals who will be playing for 10 million that the sponsors have given them to play for.

The Subsidiary will tee off with players playing Stableford full handicap.
