Nile Special Best Sports Personality of August 2015:

  • Runners Up: She Cranes Netball Team (445 Votes)
  • Commended: Uganda National Baseball Team, Golfer Ronald Otile, Kobs Rugby Club, Desh Kananura Rally Team and Busoga College Mwiri Cricket Team

The Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) has on Monday voted 2015 world athletics championship bronze marathon winner, Solomon Munyo Mutai as the Nile Special best sports personality for the month of August 2015.

He clocked 2:10:42 hours to finish third in the world championship marathon held in Beijing, China.

Mutai beat the Uganda netball she cranes team by a difference of 55 votes in a two man race during the association’s monthly convention at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

Majority of the USPA members believed Mutai’s efforts could not go unnoticed as he tallied 500 votes to the She Cranes 445.

Raymond Ssekandi, a sports journalist working with The Observer moved the motion of nomination recognizing the 20 year old Mutai;

The fact that Mutai was the only athlete that won a medal for Uganda at the world championships in Beijing, he needs recognition and motivation. He entered a strong field that had Steven Kiprotich and the rest of the elite runners from Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea but still put up a spirited fight to finish third

The monthly meeting was presided over by the Association president, Sabiti Muwanga.

Muwanga used the platform to thank the members who participated in the recently concluded USPA road safety campaign.

I appreciate everyone’s effort in the successful USPA road safety activities that we concluded the previous week. Keep up the spirit as we continue to serve the sports fraternity and the national at large

How the USPA members voted:

The winner, Mutai (with 500 votes) was nominated by James Ssekandi and seconded by Vision Group’s Nicholas Kalyango.

Magic F.M’s Emma Ssekago nominated the Netball She Cranes, seconded by Innerman F.M’s  Solomon Ssaka.


The sports journalists appreciated every sportsmen who excelled in the respective sporting disciplines over the duration of the past month.

Uganda National Baseball Team, Golfer Ronald Otile, Kobs Rugby Club, Desh Kananura Rally Team and Busoga College Mwiri Cricket Team were commended.

The base ball team became the first African country to win a match at the little league world series when they whipped the Dominican Republic 4-1.

National team golfer Ronald Otile got the nod for his impressive performance that saw him win the 10th Uganda open (professional’s category) shortly after he had claimed the 73rd Uganda amateur open.

The Kobs rugby club won the national 7’s meet, Desh Kananura finished second at the pearl of African rally and Busoga college Mwiri took the pepsi national schools week title.

Mutai will be crowned on the 17th September 2015 at Imperial Royale Hotel during the monthly dinner.
