Uganda Cranes head coach, Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has defended the choice of players he traveled with for the away tie against Sudan in the CHAN qualifier return leg on Sunday.

The Serb named two new players in Express F.C’s towering defender, Ayub Kizza and Bright Stars skipper, Benard Muwanga on the 18 man squad that traveled to Khartoum on Friday.

We (technical team) did not merely take names to Sudan. We selected the best players who proved the right mentality in training from Monday when started training at Njeru up to Friday’s last training,

With the central defender Hassan Wasswa Dazzo suspended for the match due to red card in the first leg at Nakivubo, there was need to name yet another defender as replacement.

The surprise decision was the omission of defensive midfield gem, Hakim Ssenkumba who made the bench in the home game and was eventually used a substitute in place of Kezironi Kizito later in the second half.

On Ssenkumba’s omission, the Serbian born tactician hinted on two aspects – the players’ mentality in training and the tactical approach for the away game.

We named the players who proved that they have the right away mentality. The natural replacement was supposed to be the young defender, Timothy Awani. But, because his passport has issues, he could not travel. We are ready for the battle and expect positive results.

Apart from Ssenkumba and Wasswa who made the 18 man squad that faced Sudan in the first leg, all the other 16 players who featured in Kampala traveled with the team to Sudan.

It remains to be seen who will start alongside Shafiq Bakaki in the central defense.

Uganda needs to avoid defeat to be sure of qualification to the CHAN finals in Rwanda next year for the third time running having made the past two in Sudan and South Africa.
