CHAN 2016: Rwanda (16th January – 6th February 2016)

2015 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup winner, Mathias Kigonya, also a goalkeeper with Uganda Premier League side, Bright Stars Football Club trained with the Cranes CHAN team for the first time on Sunday at the Mutesa II stadium, Wankulukuku.

The diminutive though quick on reaction shot stopper was among the 25 players who turned up for training on Sunday.

He had been earlier told to rest and was expected to start training on Monday alongside seven other CECAFA winning players who were exempted from the first two sessions.

On the opening day of training, only one goalkeeper, James Alitho had attended the training at the African Bible University, on Saturday morning.

The other called goalie, Douglas Kisembo (of Police F.C) only watched the three hour training session on the sidelines because he was on medication after a bout of typhoid.

Kigonya, who looked promising throughout the session with goalkeeping coach Fred Kajoba and Alitho; reaffirmed to Kawowo Sports about his readiness for the job at hand;

I am more than ready to train and be selected among the players to represent Uganda at CHAN 2016. The training has been good and hopefully, it progresses well as we get closer to the tournament

The head coach, Milutin Sredojevic in fear of a burn out of the players rested a bulk of the players who were with the team in the 2015 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup defence.

Another goalkeeper Ismail Watenga (Vipers S.C), Denis Okot (KCCA), Richard Kasaga (URA), Bernard Muwanga (Bright Stars), Erisa Sekisambu (Vipers), Muzamir Mutyaba (KCCA), captain Faruku Miya (Vipers), Joseph Ochaya (KCCA), Ivan Ntege (KCCA) and KCCA’s latest new catch, Ceasar Okhuti will join the rest of the players on Monday.

On the third day of the team’s training. the Cranes will use do gymnastics at the Paradise Fitness Gym, located at Accacia Mall in Kampala.

Residential training starts on Tuesday at the FUFA technical center in Njeru.
