Ugandans Timothy Toroitich and Juliet Chekwel managed top finishes at the fifth IAAF Cross Country Permit meeting in Elgoibar, Spain, as Kenya dominated on Sunday.

The duo made fourth each, in the men and women’s races respectively, Chekwel losing to winner, Kenya’s Irene Cheptai followed Ethiopia’s duo Netsanet Gudeta and Alemitu Heroye.

Chekwel broke off the leading pack by the halfway mark and all was left to the trio as they put in immense efforts for the final shift.

23-year-old Cheptai later crossed the finish line unopposed, 22 seconds in front of Gudeta to become the first Kenyan woman to win in Elgoibar since 2009.

Toroitich braved the sunny conditions in the 10.8km event, keeping up with the leading sextet that comprised fellow Ugandan Moses Kibet, Ayalew, Bahraini Hassan Elabbasi and Spain’s Toni Abadia.

At the tape, Elabbassi easily prevailed over Toroitich to beat him to third place while Ayalew secured a two-second margin on Tola for triumph.

The next IAAF Cross Country Permit meeting will be the Cinque Molini Meet in San Vittore Olona on 31 January.
