2016 Nigeria Charity Shield:

Enyimba F.C 0 (3) – 0 (4) Akwa United

Reigning Nigerian Premier League champions, Enyimba F.C lost the 2016 Charity Shield to Akwa United in Abuja.

This followed a 4-3 shootout after normal time had ended goalless for the two sides at the Abuja National Stadium in the curtain-raiser for season.

Akwa United lost Yusuf Adio in the 65th minute for unsporting conduct.

With the victory in Abuja, Akwa United have successfully won three major trophies since November – the Federation Cup 2015, Super 4 and now the Charity Shield.

The Akwa Ibom team are one of Nigeria’s flag bearers in the CAF Confederation Cup and despite being green horns on the continent, they started out on bright note with an away win in Pointe Noire, Congo last weekend.

Enyimba F.C is set to host Uganda’s Vipers Sports Club in the return leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round in Port Harcourt.

Erisa Ssekisambu’s well booted winner at Nakivubo stadium in Kampala grant the Ugandan side a slim one goal lead going into the return leg.
