Playing on the AstroTurf surfaces for most Ugandan footballers has never been a walk in the park.

Acclimatization from the used bare patched grounds to green lushes too, time immemorial is a challenge especially for most rural based players.

More intriguing has been the case of switching to the artificial grass (AstroTurf) since few players have had a chance to feel the surface.

But, to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) players, the project of turning their Phillip Omondi stadium playing surface from natural to synthetic material has been fully embraced with open hands.

As Dutch based company, Edel Grass Limited were rolling the turf at Lugogo, a few KCCA F.C players had a rare opportunity to juggle and dribble the ball.

Forwards Samson Ceasar Okhuti, Farouk Kawooya and Paul Mucureezi comfortably juggled the ball with the ease of rising and setting sun in summer.

An excited Kawooya told Kawowo Sports, it is more or less than natural grass;

It is good. Just the grip with the right shoes will keep you going

Widely traveled Nelson Ssenkatuuka is not new to such facilities. He believes, if the turf laid at Lugogo meets the right grade and quality, then it could be better than natural grass at most times.

In case the quality is top class, then the ball can pass well.

The astro turf has been troublesome many at times for goalkeepers and most outfield players for the unique bounce of the ball than natural grass.

Edel Grass limited’s official, Ramon Kuttschreutter,  from Holland asserts that the quality of the artificial grass laid at Lugogo is top class above the ordinary.

This is the best synthetic grass. We have worked at several African countries in Burkina Faso, Gabon, Mali, Ivory Coast, Botswana, Liberia, Benin and many others. The results have been excellent. Lugogo will be best playing surface in Uganda.

Once completed, the Phillip Omondi stadium will be the second Astro-turf playing facility in Uganda after the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru.

The KCCA Stadium was named after Uganda Cranes and KCCA F.C legend, Phillip Omondi.

The city authority plans to modernize the facility with an all-seater arrangement and state of art dressing room with  sophisticated dressing rooms and administrative blocks.
