Lira Municipality based club, Sporting United are 90 or so minutes away from attaining a slot in the Uganda Premier League.

Sporting United overcame Masavu 2-1 in the first of the two promotional playoff matches played at Nakivubo stadium on Thursday.

The game kicked off to an impressive start for Masavu when striker Peter Lumolo hit the bar inside the opening 60 seconds of the game with goalkeeper Steven Odong beaten.

Five minutes later, Sporting United had an attempt from Denis Omedi  Medinho fly wide of goal.

In the 6th minute, Omedi lit the otherwise dull atmosphere when he slotted in the opening goal of the day between the legs of the advancing goalie, Godwin Bule.

In the 19th minute, Masavu winger Fred Umon had a chance to bring the game level but his first touch let him down when he handled the ball after left back Hakim Ssekito cross from the left.

In the 23rd minute, Onesmas Andama’s freekick kissed the woodwork in yet another chance fluffed by Masavu.

A 180 degree turn and shot effort in the 27th minute by Emmy Ongom ensured the Lira boys carried a 2 goal lead.

Masavu called for the first change of the game five minutes to the half time break when Fred Umon paved way for Kenneth Tumusiime as the half time ended 2-0 in favour of Sporting United.

As the second half resumed, midfielder Henry Kiwanuka replaced former SC Villa player, Sulaiman Majanjaalo.

Meanwhile, Ronny Okulu was replaced by Walter Odongo for Sporting United.

Masavu pulled a goal back through Onesmas Andama’s well converted penalty after a handball by Goddy Ayo in the 65th minute.

With quarter an hour of action left on the clock, Andama had a goalie to beat incident but Odong was alert to parry the ball for a corner.

A minute later, Sporting United called for their second change of the game when Patience Luka replaced sharp shooter Dickens Okwi.

Lumolo missed from close range in the closing ten minutes before Sporting United called for the final change of the game when Richard Bandura replaced Emmy Ongom.

Sporting United is now set to play Proline (beat Ndejje University 4-2 on post match penalties) on Sunday at Nakivubo stadium to determine who joins Onduparaka and Kirinya-Jinja S.S  in the Uganda Premier League.
