Wananchi (W) claimed their second National Hockey League title thanks to a 5-1 thrashing of Kampala Hockey Club Swans on Sunday.
The defending champions made a light work of Derrick Ringtho’s side at the National Hockey Stadium, Lugogo thanks to a brace from Mildred Amia and a goal apiece for Norah Alum, Doreen Mbabazi and Peace Makoha.
Amia struck first in the 14th minute to give her side a deserved lead, and although Patricia Namubiru leveled matters six minutes later, Wananchi ran riot in the second half with Alum (38), Mbabazi (51) and Makoha (67) joining the party, before Amia completing her brace as the side cruised to a comfortable victory.
Aside from pride, Wananchi were up against a side that had nothing to play for. KHC ended the league placed third with 27 points.
The result meant Wananchi won the league with 37 points with a game spare. Their triumph is their second in their short history having won last year’s title.
The side now turns attention to the Africa Cup of Club Championship due next year in Kenya.
