Weatherhead’s [M] maiden game at the Africa Cup of Club Championship ended in the most brutal way as Exchequers from Ghana thrashed the tournament debutants 6-2 in the opening game of the competition on Saturday at City Park Stadium, Nairobi- Kenya.

The West Africans netted thrice in the first half through Morrison Kauassi [5], Akaba Elikam [12] and Joseph Appiah before scoring as many in the final stanza through their captain Emmanuel Ankomah who scored a brace and Osei Maxwell.

Although Lawrence Okongo and Vincent Kasasa got their names on the score sheet, it was game over for the Ugandan side that came second in the National Hockey League last year as their strikes could only pass for consolation.

Prior the game, Kasasa, Weatherhead player-coach had been optimistic his side would match not only the Ghanaians but all their opponents in Pool A aside from defending champions Easterners.

Kasasa said: “It [Pool A] is manageable. We shall put up a fight. I expect us to put a good show against Wananchi, Ghana and Kenya Police”

However, his confidence was reduced to a nightmare as the Ghanaians enjoyed a smooth ride.

Next up for Weatherhead is a match against the defending champions Easterners on Sunday.
