African Goalkeeper of the Century (as named by IFFHS during the Century Elections), Joseph Antoine ‘Jojo’ Bell has tipped Uganda Cranes’ Dennis Onyango and Egypt veteran shot stopper Essam El-Hadary to shine at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
The two time Africa Cup winner and Egyptian league winner in 1982, who also played for Cameroon at the 1982, 1990 and 1994 FIFA World Cup singles out the two goalkeepers for their calmness, organizational abilities and experience that will steer their respective countries to perform well.
In an exclusive interview with the legend in Libreville on Saturday, Bell asserts no great performing can progress further without the services of a sound goalkeeper.
You can not perform well or even win a championship without a good goalkeeper. But, remember football is not boxing.
It is a team sport.
That is why countries with the best individual players do not win championships. You need a collection of players to play as a unit and win.
At this year’s AFCON, i see Dennis Onyango and El-Hadary (Essam) doing well
The former Al-Mokawloon al-Arab (Egypt), Olympique De Marseille, Sporting Toulon Var, FC Girondins de Bordeaux and AS Saint-Étienne player thinks the overwhelming favourites to win the championship are Senegal, Egypt, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana and Algeria.
Any of these countries have the impetus to be crowned champions after the tournament.
Bell is now working for Radio France International at the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
The 62-year-old Cameroonian won two African titles with the Indomitable Lions in 1984 and 1988.
