KCCA FC, Uganda’s representatives in the 2017 CAF Champions League begin their journey in the competition on Friday at home with a date against Club Desportivo 1 de Agosto of Angola.

The two sides square off at the Phillip Omondi stadium, Lugogo targeting a decent result before another meeting in the final leg a week later.

Mike Mutebi, the coach of the home side has made it clear the team’s targets this campaign is to reach the expanded group stages.

“From the start, our objective is to play in the group stages of this lucrative competition,” said Mutebi.

On the game against the Angolans, Mutebi is optimistic his side will do enough to get past the Angolans who he admitted having little knowledge about but was more concerned about keeping a clean sheet in the first leg at home.

If you look at the genesis, we have conceded silly goals despite scoring as many and we need to see that change. We expect them (players) to play in a disciplined manner, the good way, the correct way, and the intelligent way but by and large, we are satisfied and confident.

On whether he knows much about the 10-times Angolan champions, Mutebi was brave enough to reveal none but admits the first few minutes will be enough to know what they bring to the table.

All we know is that they are champions from their country. When the game starts, maybe we shall read their set up but for starters, we go in playing our way since we are playing at home.

For Ugandan international defender, Joseph Ochaya, the team is in good stead and raring to go and reach the group stages.

As players, we are ready to give our best on the day and we hope God is on our side on the day.

Team News

The Kasasiro have a clean bill of health with defender Timothy Awany, who was a doubt a couple of days after returning from Gabon also fit to play.

Former team captain Tom Masiko is also available for selection but goalkeeper Douglas Kisembo is doubtful.

From the visiting team, not much has been heard but on arrival at Entebbe International Airport, the few who talked to the media said all is well.

Man to Watch

Muzamiru Mutyaba (KCCA) – The creative force behind the team’s goal scoring spree. The laid back but a midfielder with finesse, Mutyaba’s ability to unlock the opponents’ defences will be more than crucial against the ball playing and usually very organised side.

Hermenegildo da Costa aka Geraldo (CD Primeiro de Agosto) – The 25 year old is the fulcrum of the team and his midfield gimmicks will be vital for the visitors if they are going to leave Lugogo with a decent result.

Like Mutyaba, Geraldo also has goals in his legs and scored 7 for the club last season on top of assisting many others.

He comes into the game with utmost confidence after he netted the winner in the Angola Super Cup on Saturday before that won his side the season curtain raiser in Angola.
