As fate would dictate, a fundraising drive at the KCCA Lugogo stadium meant for the frail former Uganda Cranes defender Ausi Kaaya nearly turned nasty, as the patient was accidentally hit by a brick in the face.

By the time of the unfortunate incident, Kaaya was resting at the stadium dug out, moments after KCCA’s 4-1 win over Police in a build up match that was part of the fundraising drive.

After the accident, he was swiftly rushed for medication at a nearby dispensary when the deep cut was dressed up before he was brought back just in time for the rest of the programme that had two other matches on board as well as the auctioning of his portrait.

For starters, Kaaya who also played his club football at State House, Police, KCCA and lately Proline is seeking Shs. 17M to undertake a second decortication of the lungs, an operation that necessitates removal of infected layer on the right side of the lungs.

By the close of business on Wednesday, Shs. 4,263,700 was collected by the football family during the fundraising drive for the former right back who won 35 caps, featuring in 8 CECAFA senior challenge cup tournaments with only one title in 2005.

In his appreciation speech, Kaaya lauded the efforts of the football family for the job well done;

I am very grateful for the love you have shown me.

To play for me such matches when i am alive it is a big honour.

My only advise to young players to be conduct themselves in a good way so that you can be helped in future when need be.

President of the International Scouts and Guides Fellowship, Mathias Lukwago, also head of the Uganda Cycling Federation (UCF) bought Kaaya’s  portrait at Shs. 950,000.

Lukwago was the highest bidder beating a strong and ‘spirited healthy challenge’ from Kawempe Old Timers and Proline Football Club.

In the matches played, KCCA fans drew 2 all with Proline fans.
