Joshua Cheptegei celebrates a victory

Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) on Monday, 12th February voted for athlete Joshua Cheptegei as the Nile Special USPA sports personality for the month of January 2018.

The sports journalists under the unifying body, USPA convened at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala during their monthly meeting.

Chepetegei, winner at the 36th Cross Internacional de Itálica in Santiponce, near the Spanish city of Seville, tallied 360 points to shed off City Oilers basket ball team who scored 335 points.

The 21 year old athlete crossed the finishing tape first in the 10.8KM race ahead of country-mate Jacob Kiplimo in a 1-2 photo finish.

Cheptegei posted 00:30:54, closely followed by Kiplimo in 00:30:35 in second place during a slower race ran on a pleasant and dry afternoon with the temperature about 16C.

Another Ugandan, Joel Ayeko was seventh with a timing of 31:48 in the same race.

On the night of January 12th 2018, the City Oilers team humbled KIU Titans 68-60 to win the best of 7 series 4-0 during the final play offs of the national basketball league at Lugogo indoor stadium.

City Oilers won the unprecedented fifth National Basketball League title.

The rally crew of Jus Mangat and Joseph Kamya returned 295 points to take third place.

For starters, Mangat and navigator Kamya won the 2018 Mbarara Rally which is the season opener on the national rally calendar.

Christened as the PiliPili rally team, the duo returned the quickest time in the 194.10kilometres rally posting 1hr 47 mins and 42 seconds to a break a jink that had extended for now five years.

The crowning ceremony for Chepetegi will be conducted together with the February, March and April winners during the quarterly awards night at Imperial Royal Hotel, Kampala on a date that will be confirmed.
