Express’ Davis Mayanja takes on BUL player Patrick Sembuya

Express and BUL played a goal-less stalemate in the Uganda Premier League on Tuesday at the Muteesa II Wankulukuku.

Within the opening 10 minutes, BUL goalkeeper Hannington Ssebwalunyo reacted faster off the line to thwart a through ball from Michael Birungi with striker Tonny Odur piling pressure.

BUL suffered an early injury upset when left back Richard Matovu limped out for Hakim Magombe on 12 minutes.

On 20 minutes, the home side survived a scare as BUL forward Oromochan Villa beat goalie Mathias Muwanga from outside the goal area but the goalkeeper recovered well in time to save the effort.

Express FC captain Julius Ntambi became the first player to be cautioned on the day for tripping down Hamis Tibita with about five minutes to the climax of the game.

Moments later BUL first half substitute Magombe was yellow carded for a harsh push on Ntambi as the two sides returned to the locker rooms tied goal-less.

At the start of the second stanza, Express called off Ibrahim Kayiwa for Joel Male to reinforce the offensive midfield department.

Ten minutes into the second half, Express technical team led by head coach Kefa Kisala introduced Eric Kambale for Mubarak Nsubuga.

For long spells of the second half, there were no clear-cut opportunities apart from Owori’s long range shot from over 35 yards on 70 minutes.

Tibita curled over a free-kick from 20 yards in BUL’s other chance on the dull evening.

BUL made their second change with the last quarter an hour of the game with Deogracious Ojok taking over Villa Oromochan’s place.

Express had a chance to break the dead-lock but Kambale’s effort from the free-kick near the 18 yards goal.

The free-kick had risen following a foul on Odur by defender Abdul Mayanja.

Towering midfielder Joshua “Letti” Lubwama was the visitors’ final change, coming in for Daniel Shabena on 79 minutes.

The final change for the Red Eagles came barely 10 minutes to the climax of the game with Nasir Mbabali taking Michael Birungi’s slot.

There were no other moments to warrant a goal scoring time as the two sides ended goal-less.

In the other matches on Tuesday, KCCA out-muscled visiting Bright Stars 2-0 with Phibert Obenchan and Patrick Henry Kaddu on target.

Meanwhile, Onduparaka defeated Kirinya-Jinja S.S 3-0 at the Jinja S.S Arena.

Match day four resumes with four games on Wednesday.
