Categories: Singles, Doubles & Quard Sculls

Uganda is among the four countries that will take part in the first ever East and Central Africa Rowing regatta due to take place this weekend in Khartoum, Sudan.

Hosts Sudan will be joined by Uganda as well as two horn of Africa countries Djibouti and Somalia.

The two-day championship will take place at the Sudan rowing high performance center, along the gigantic River Nile.

The five-man Uganda delegation travelled to Khartoum at the start of the week and they have been engaged in test of the competition boats and the waters.

The team has William Mwanga who is the head coach as well as a rower, Edison Abahurire, Isaac Mugula, Suzan Nabukenya and Rodrick Muhumuza (Technical and Umpire).

Mugula and Abahurire will race in the light weight double, Mwanga will take part in the men open single, Nabukenya (women open single), Nabukenya and Mwanga in the mixed double while the mixed quad will have Mwanga, Abahurire, Nabukenya and Mugula.

We travelled in earlier for acclimatization with training before the main event. It has indeed helped us to get acquitted prior to the main event. We are set and focused.

The event is being organized by the Sudan Rowing and Canoe Federation.

Before the main event gets underway on Saturday, there was a successful 2019 FISA Technical Coaching course, regional training camp and umpire training.

We are glad to host the FISA technical coaching course, regional training camp, umpire training as well as the first ever East and Central rowing regatta in Sudan. All these are in the context of rowing development in the Eastern Africa region.

We believe we shall come back with positive results. The days spent here before the main event have helped the athletes to acclimatize to the hot weather while also getting used to the equipment and the head on winds on the race course. I expect a great level of competition. The athletes we brought here are racing in Ugandan colors for the first time apart from Nabukenya. For the rest, it’s a first time and also a learning curve in preparation for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers.
