Rugby player Phillip Wokorach becomes the first sportsman to win the Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) fan’s choice award.

The category that was introduced for the first time saw Wokorach win the accolade where fans had to vote online.

The sports journalists’ umbrella body confirmed Wokorach as the winner on Friday just hours to the coveted USPA Gala.

“We are happy to announce that rugby star Phillip Wokorach is the first winner of the Nile Special – USPA Fans’ Choice Award.”

Wokorach got 60% of the fan vote; Commonwealth double gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei came second in the polls with (32%).

Netball player Lillian Ajio and Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango got (4%) each.

Wokorach had good performance for both club and country

He guided Kabras Sugar to the 2018 Kenya Cup finals and the Enterprise Cup finals and was Samurai franchise MVP and top scorer at the Amsterdam 7s in Netherlands.

Wokorach had most points for the Rugby Cranes at the Africa Gold Cup and was the highest African try scorer at the 7s World Cup in San Francisco, USA.

Currently with the Rugby Cranes at the Hongkong 7s, Wokorach is also in the race for the top gong of Athlete of the Year 2018 alongside Cheptegei, Ajio and Onyango.
