Ethiopia women’s national team, the Lucy advanced to second round of the Tokyo 2020 qualifiers after dumping out Uganda.
The Lucy won 1-0 in Kampala on Saturday to progress 4-2 on aggregate. The first leg in Addis Ababa had ended 3-2.
Coach Selam Zeray was delighted that her charges qualified to the next level and indicated that the better team won.
“I’m happy that we have managed to win both home and away. The players fought hard over the two games and I believe the better team progressed,” said Zeray after the game.
She, however, was quick to say the second leg was not an easy task because Uganda put up a spirited fight.
“It was not easy to win here. Uganda was good in the first half and got chances but we held on until we got that goal.”
Zeray also thinks, the weather conditions also affected them in the way they played on Saturday.
“We struggled to get used to the weather. It was so hot and more so playing on astro turf. But I’m happy that we got through that and won.”
Loza Abera scored the lone goal at the StarTimes Stadium to help Ethiopia advance to the next stage where they will face Cameroon.
