Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango admits he had to bring his very best game on the final PSL day to help a team that has fought for him all season.
The Uganda Cranes number one and skipper was Man of the Match as Sundowns beat Free State Stars 1-0 to retain their PSL title at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.
“Well done to the guys, “Onyango told SuperSport TV before reflecting on the season and the final match day.
It’s been a very tough season for me and the team because we had so many games. But I had to bring my A-game because we knew we were playing a very strong team fighting for their lives. I knew we could score a goal and of course, keeping a clean sheet would be much better for a team that has been fighting for me all season.Denis Onyango
Free State Stars, home to Onyango’s compatriot Martin Kizza was a side fighting to stay up and that made the fixture even difficult but decided by Onyango’s brilliance and Phakamani Mahlambi goal.
“We knew it was going to be very tough. Coming to Goble Park is never easy even though we’ve been winning here for the last few years. They were fighting relegation and we were fighting for the league. All we had to do was win our game and leave the rest to the PSL.”
The win put the Brazilians on 59 points, two ahead of second placed rivals Orlando Pirates who won their last game 3-0 but lost the title for the second year running.
