Zambia defeated Uganda, 14-12, in the winner-take-all Group 1C game of the Barthes Cup played at Kyadondo Rugby Club on Sunday.

Mwanza Mwimba’s late penalty turned Richard Kinyai’s four second-half kicks into consolation for the hosts.

Zambia dominated the first half of game right from the kick-off and the pressure they piled on the hosts was soon rewarded with a penalty. Mwimba split the posts for 03-00 lead.

The Ugandans tried to fight back in the territory game but could hardly hold on to their possession as Zambia were solid on defense but also, Kinyai fluffed a couple of penalties.

Zambia would then extend their lead George Mwimba received a ball out on the wing, kicked through, collected and powered down only try of the game at the corner. Mwanza’s conversion was wide but later slotted in another penalty and Zambia had a commanding 11-00 lead into the break.

After the break, it was all Uganda on the attack through the Zambians had their moments in which they put their hosts under pressure.

With Zambia giving no room for a try, the Ugandans started going for points at every opportunity they got with Kinyai, who missed all his first half kicks finally cleaned up and kicked in four penalties to give Uganda a 12-11 lead.

Uganda defended for their lives but as fulltime neared Zambia were awarded a penalty at the halfway line and Mwimba stepped up and drilled it through to give Zambia a 14-12 lead and eventually the win that came with a promotion to Group 1B.
