Sebastien Desabre

Sebastian Desabre has expressed high hopes to improve Uganda cranes’ past records in the African Cup of Nations tournament as he debuts at the tournament.

Desabre arrived in Egypt along with the 23 man squad and officials on Monday evening, four days to the Uganda Cranes’ first encounter.

In the 2017 edition, Uganda bowed out with only one point earned against Mali. The team suffered defeats to Egypt and Ghana.

“My ambition is to write a good memory with my team. We did very good things during the camp and the motivation is really high.

“We expect good results from here but the most objective is on improving the previous result Uganda had in Afcon, then we can aim higher after that,” said Desabre upon his arrival in Cairo.

Uganda Cranes was group with host country Egypt, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe in Group A.

With Desabre’s experience in Egypt where he is a former coach to Ismalia club, he expects less challenge from the hosts Egypt than against DR Congo and Zimbabwe.

“We know very well all the teams we are facing and I still believe we are ready for them.

“Of course people think I have an advantage having trained some of the players on the Egypt team, but I will not have much hope on that, it all has to be on the pitch.

“The most vital game for us is the game with Congo. Our first game can determine our fate. We must win the Congo game so that we play the rest with less pressure.”

Desabre further hinted on his tactics for the upcoming tournament.

“Our ambitions are so high. And to win you have to take some risks.

“I have told my boys to play with confidence and take some risks while attacking. To win you must score which comes with taking risks,” he asserted.

Uganda will face the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday afternoon in their Group A opener.

After Saturday’s clash with DRC, Uganda will play Zimbabwe on 26th June before facing the host team Egypt on 30th June.
