Gomba Lions recorded their second successive victory with a 4-3 win over Ssese during the Muganzirwazza group of Masaza Cup 2020 at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru on Friday, January 15, 2021.
Charles Bbaale scored a brace as George Kaddu and Junior Juma Lutankome netted one apiece for the four time record winners.
Moses Okwera, Mubarak Masereka and second half substitute Lawrence Kambugu replied for Ssese to grant the match a tense finish.
Kaddu struck a spectacular free-kick from 40 yards past goalkeeper Fred Bukenya for the opener after 12 minutes.
Lutankome headed home the second off a long throw-in by Kaddu in the 36th minute.
Masereka pulled a goal back with 3 minutes to the half time break before Bbaale tapped home from close range off Colline Sseruwu’s cut back on the stroke of half time as Gomba took the 3-1 lead by the half way mark.
In the 58th minute, Bbaale notched his brace after beating the off-side trap to finish off Ali Bayo Arshavin’s defence splitter for Gomba’s fourth goal on the day.
On the hour mark, Gomba called for a double change.
Bayo and Sseruwu were replaced by Ashraf Zizinga and Jackson Ssemugabi respectively.
Six minutes later, Okwera reduced the margin with a well tapped in effort after Ben Kenedy Kirembeka’s donkey work on the left flank.
Come the 68th minute, Ssese made it 4-3 when second half substitute Lawrence Kambugu shot past goalkeeper Nasif Kabuye.
As a strategy to strengthen the midfield, Gomba introduced defender Fred Gift for Isaac Musiima in the final 20 minutes to hold onto the victory that granted them a slot to the quarter finals.
Buddu won the subsequent match, 2-0 against a hard fighting 10 man Kabula.
Miisi Diego Semugera head home on the stroke of half time and Fahad Nsamba added the other goal with 18 minutes to play as Buddu secured a quarter final berth.
Kabula had Faisal Ssebyanzi red carded following a second bookable offence towards the end of the first half.
Buddu joined Gomba to the quarter finals that already has Mawogola, Mawokota, Bugerere, Busiro, Busujju and the defending champions Bulemeezi.
