Uganda Hippos head coach Morley Byekwaso talks to the U-20 players at Lugogo

Uganda U-20 National Team (The Uganda Hippos) has on Thursday kicked off preparations for the forthcoming continental expedition.

The Hippos for the first time qualified for Africa U-20 Cup of Nations after emerging Champions at the CECAFA U20 Zonal Qualifiers in December last year.

Under the stewardship of coach Morley Byekwaso, the team that entered camp had a training session at MTN Omondi Stadium on Thursday.

Of the 38 players summoned, only Nathan Odokonyero did not take part. The midfielder who plies his trade for Lincoln City FC U18 is yet to arrive in the country.

Byekwaso believes early preparations will help them to create a formidable unit with the main target of leaving a mark at the tournament.

“We have started our preparations quite early and this is important for us. The first session went on successfully and I believe we have ample time to put the pieces together before the tournament.”

“Our target is to do well at the tournament despite this being our first time. We have a very good team that can ably compete at this stage.”

The biennial Championship will be held in Mauritania between February 14th and 5th March 2021.

For the first time, the tournament will have 12 teams taking part, expanding from eight.

The top four teams will represent Africa at the 2021 U20 World Cup in Indonesia.
