The Buganda Kingdom Minister of Sports, Leisure and Recreation Owek. Henry Moses Ssekabembe Kiberu has given assurance that the 2021 Masaza Cup tournament will take place.

The assurance comes in the wake of the 42 days’ national lockdown in the country because of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Owek. Ssekabembe confirmed the development as he addressed the populous on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 in a recorded audio message circulated via the social media platforms.

I want to assure the Buganda Kingdom that the 2021 Masaza Cup tournament will be held. Plans are underway to lay strategies which will be introduced before the committee of ministers and eventually made public to the general kingdom.

Relatedly, the minister called for a collaborative effort of all sports federations to have massive vaccinations of people against COVID-19.

We have seen the European championship and Copa America tournament successfully played with fans after vaccination. These countries ensured massive vaccination of their people. We should adapt this as well.

Like last season, the Masaza Cup tournament was delayed because of the pandemic.

Eventually, the testing of players, officials and other support staff was conducted before the championship was played in one confined place at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru between 12th December 2020 and January 2021.

Eventually, the final was held at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on 6th March 2021 as record champions Gomba (10 men) overcame rivals Buddu 3-1.
