Fast growing South Sudan will face fellow Cecafa region nation Djibouti in the preliminary round of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2023 qualifiers.

The draw conducted on Friday, 21 January 2022 in Douala also pitted Eritrea against Botswana, Somalia against Eswatini and Chad versus Gambia.

In other fixtures, Seychelles will face Lesotho while Sao Tome and Principe will take on Mauritius.

Former Cameroon captain Rigobert Song and Nigeria Super Eagles former star Emmanuel Amunike assisted CAF Director of Competitions Samson Adamo in the draw process, which included the 12 least ranked teams.

The six aggregate winners will join the 42 highest ranked teams into the Group Stage of the qualifiers.

The draw marks the kickoff towards the 34th edition of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

Following are the fixtures, with the first legs played at home of the lower ranked teams:

  • Eritrea v Botswana
  • Sao Tome and Principe v Mauritius
  • Djibouti v South Sudan
  • Seychelles v Lesotho
  • Somalia v Eswatini

  1. For me it does not make sense to ignore the results of the current African Cup of Nations, namely, Gambia does not need to be in these pre-qualifying matches. There are other worse teams.
