Gerald Kirya passes the ball during Proline's recent match against Nyamityobora at the MTN Omondi Stadium, Lugogo

Left footed workaholic midfielder-cum-full back Gerald Kirya is a product graduate of academies, schools’ football programs and the FUFA Juniors League.

Born and bred in Lira, Northern Uganda, Kirya commenced his football journey at Lira Sports Academy before he shifted base to Destiny Sports Academy.

In the time being, he also used to play at Mantle and VH Public primary schools.

The trend continued as he was admitted at St Mary’s Boarding Secondary School, Kitende for Ordinary and Advanced levels of education.

He later joined Vipers Junior Team between 2015 and 2019, winning the FUFA Juniors League U-17 title in the 2017-2018 season.

In 2020, he joined Proline Football Club where he is up to now as a holding midfielder and left full back.

He acknowledges this natural organic growth of a player has helped him thus far to grow technically as a player.

I give credit to where I started from. From Lira and Destiny Academies in Lira, they gave me a firm foundation. Also, the schools helped me get playing time and confidence before joining Vipers Junior Team and now Proline. I am humbled for this journey.

Kirya is the only child of Paul Kamya and Florence Agwang, born on 20th August 2003.

He grew up with a single parent following the death of his father a fortnight after he was born.

“I did not see my father since mum told me he died as I was only two weeks old. I grew up with my mother who also died in 2018. I was the only child in the family. I have to carry on the family legacy through football” Kirya bitterly recounts.

Like most left footed players, Kirya is a complete joy to watch with sublime close ball control, exceptional positional sense, tackling abilities, passing from all ranges and an excellent shooter of the ball.

With no local hero to look up to, Kirya has three role models that have inspired him in his football journey.

Real Madrid duo of Carlos Henrique Casimiro (Brazil) and Luka Modrić (Croatia) as well as Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong (Netherlands) are his role models.

Aspirations:

Kirya has already featured for the Uganda U-17 junior team as he was part of the team for the 2018 CECAFA U-17 championship in Burundi.

He yearns to graduate to the U-20, U-23 and senior national team with a dream to play professional football in the established leagues of this world.

“I want to maintain the work ethic and training regime because I desire to play for the Uganda national team (Uganda Cranes) and also play professional football in the world’s established leagues” Kirya attests.

Since August 11, 2021, Kirya has been managed by Next Pro Sport management whose CEO and founder Sultan Suliz Atubo sings special praise of his client.

“I believe Gerald Kirya has got a tremendous amount of talent and potential in himself, we are here to offer him the best guidance and platform to build his career.” Atubo confesses.

Gerald Kirya is one of the big young talents coming through the ranks in the country at the moment and to be part of his career is something we at NextPro Sports are very excited about.
