For the first time in her career at Vanguard University, Melissa Akullu has earned back-to-back Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honours.

The 6’1″ center averaged 25 points and 13.5 rebounds for the week as the Lions went 2-0 with wins over Ottawa University Surprise (OUAZ) and Arizona Christian.

Akullu notched her sixth and seventh double-double of the season during the stretch while shooting 56.4% (22 of 39) from the field.

In the 86-49 victory over the OUAZ Spirit, Akullu poured in a season and game-high 29 points to go along with 14 rebounds and five steals. She shot 13 of 21 from the field.

Against the Firestorm, Akullu netted 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting, pulling down 13 rebounds in the 87-66 win. It was her third consecutive 20-point game and fifth overall this season. It was a fourth straight double-digit rebounds game for the junior who also played a big role defensively with three steals.

In the only game of the previous week, she scored 26 points to go with 12 rebounds for her (then) fifth double-double (and the 20th of her career) as the Lions rolled to a 73-61 victory against Southeastern University Fire at the Westmont Holiday Classic. She shot 12-of-15 from the field and hit both of her free throw attempts in 34 minutes of action.

Akullu leads the GSAC in rebounds per game (11.2) and field goal percentage (.577). She now has three career Player of the Week honours.
