Women’s rugby in Uganda has many similarities with men’s. Thunderbirds, like Kobs and Heathens, swept everything there was to win for years until Avengers and Black Pearls, like Pirates and Hippos, stepped up to the party.

Since then, the women’s game has been a three-horse race for every piece of silverware available to win.

Black Pearls have cemented their place as the queens of the short and fast-paced sevens for two years now. And last year, Avengers snatched the Uganda Cup from Thunderbirds in a nailbiting final at Entebbe.

Black Pearls did not take part in that tournament. But they returned to action in the Central Region Women’s Championship with a big statement win against Avengers in their own backyard. Emilly Lekuru inspired the visitors to a 19-08 victory.

Thunderbirds on the other hand swept Ewes, the newest team in the championship, by 110-05 points. Sharon Anena was named player of the one-sided match.

This presents an exciting matchup on the second day. Avengers need to beat Thunderbirds again to stay in contention for the title and Thunderbirds seek revenge for the Uganda Cup shocker.

The two will face off at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in Busambaga, Entebbe.

Black Pearls will host Ewes at Kings Park, Bweyogerere in the early 2 p.m. kickoff.
