The National Men’s Basketball Team (Silverbacks) trip to Angola for the last window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers hung in balance until Thursday.
The Federation of Uganda Basketball Association (FUBA) was in commonplace as they had no assurance of funds for the team to travel.
Needless to say, the team did not have any preparation for the tournament that starts on Friday, February 24 against Angola with Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea to follow on subsequent days.
Silverbacks started the qualifiers with barely any training back in November 2021 and a miserable 1-7 record going into the last round of games bares it all.
With no training held again, a group of nine home-based players were selected for the eleventh-hour trip to Angola to honour the fixtures and save face.
With Tony Drileba injured, Jimmy Enabu and James Okello are the. season campaigners in the squad. The duo is joined by Fayed Baale and Titus Lual who have been on the wings of the team as well as Stanley Mugerwa who also returns to the team.
Ceaser Kizito, Innocent Ochera, Peter Obleng and Rogers Dauna are also part of the travelling contingent.
City Oilers’ assistant coach Andrew Tendo will handle the team for the three games.
The team is expected to arrive in Luanda just in time for the game against the hosts.
