After ensuring Morocco became the first African nation to play in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup, Walid Regragui now wants the Atlas Lions to capture Africa again.

The Atlas Lions have now lifted the Africa Cup of Nations since 1976 and despite huge improvement of late, the title has remained elusive.

They have qualified for the tournament to be hosted by Ivory Coast with a game to play as neither Liberia nor South Africa can catch them in group K of three teams following their 2-2 draw last week.

“I told my players that we cannot be kings of the world before being kings of our continent,” Regragui said after his side beat the World’s best team, Brazil.

“When I say we must win the African Cup, they say that I am exaggerating,” Regragui continued.

“I must be careful, so I say we are not going to play for a win but we only play for happiness.”

The 2023 edition provides an opportunity for the golden generation of Morocco to be champions again and will be among favourites to lift the title.
